Friday Sermon 12th January 2007
After reading the Tashahhud, the Ta’uz , the first
chapter of the Holy Quran Hazrat Amirul Mo’menine Zafrullah Domun
said :
Today I will start to quote from the Holy Quran verses
that deal with Tauhid. I want members to hear how Allah has expressed
His Tauhid in the Holy Quran. I will make only very brief comments on
these verses or else the sermon will become too long. Some theologians
say that in at least thirty six places Allah has spoken about His Tauhid
in the Holy Quran. I am not going to quote all these verses here. I
will quote only some of them. When you read your Holy Quran , make a
note of them and meditate on them.I hope members may find these references
useful in understanding what Allah wants from each one of us.
The first verse is from the Holy Quran, Chapter 2,
Al Baqara. Allah says:
"O ye people! Adore your Guardian-Lord who created you
and those who came before you that ye may have the chance to learn righteousness.
Who has made the earth your couch and the heaven your canopy; and sent
down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith fruits for your
sustenance; then set not up rivals unto Allah when ye know (the truth)."
Ch 2: v 22.
Here we learn that our Creator is Allah. It is by
His Will that we have come into existence. We are here to cultivate
righteousness. When we die He will question us about what we did when
we were here. Hence we should not set up any equals with him.
The next verse also is from Chapter 2, Al Baqara,
verse 256. And according to the Holy Prophet Mohammad (saw)
this verse is the loftiest verse of the Holy Quran. It reads as follows:
"Allah! there is no Allah but He the
living the Self-subsisting Eternal. No slumber can seize him nor sleep.
His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede
in His presence except as He gives permission. He knows what (appear
to his creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they
compass aught of His knowledge except as He wills. His throne extends
over the heavens and the earth and He feels no fatigue in guarding and
preserving them. He is the Most High the Supreme (in glory). "
Ch 2: v 256.
In this great verse, we learn many of the attributes
of Allah as He has explained them Himself. It is this Allah that we
are asked to worship. He is the One who possesses these Unique qualities
and there is no other who may be compared to him.
The next verse is from chapter Al Imran. Allah says:
"There is no god but He: that is the witness of Allah His
angels and those imbued with knowledge standing firm on justice. There
is no god but He, the Exalted in Power the Wise." Ch 3:
V 19.
In this verse Allah gives the testimony of three witnesses
that He is the only God. These witnesses are Allah Himself, the Angels,
and men who are endowed with knowledge from Allah that He is the only
God.
"If Allah touches thee with affliction
none can remove it but He; if He touches thee with happiness He hath
power over all things.
He is the Irresistible (watching) from above over His worshippers; and
He is the Wise acquainted with all things." Ch 6 v 18,
19 .
Here we may understand that good and evil is in the
Hands of Allah. We are not denying here the law of cause and effect.
It only means that the power to do somebody good or afflict someone
with evil is in the hands of Allah.
It is Allah who causes the seed-grain and the date-stone to split and
sprout. He causes the living to issue from the dead and He is the one
to cause the dead to issue from the living. That is Allah; then how
are ye deluded away from the truth?
The next series of verses are from chapter 6 verses
95-108. It is a real delight to read these verses. If one can one should
memorize them and read them regularly in the daily prayers and also
one should reflect upon them in order to grasp as much of their meanings
as one can. They read as follows:
He it is that cleaves the daybreak (from the
dark): He makes the night for rest and tranquility and the sun and moon
for the reckoning (of time): such is the judgment and ordering of (Him)
the Exalted in Power the Omniscient.
It is He Who makes the stars (as beacons) for you that ye may guide
yourselves with their help through the dark spaces of land and sea:
We detail Our Signs for people who know.
It is He who hath produced you from a single person: here is a place
of sojourn and a place of departure: We detail Our signs for people
who understand.
It is He who sends down rain from the skies: with it We produce vegetation
of all kinds: from some We produce green (crops) out of which We produce
grain heaped up (at harvest); out of the date-palm and its sheaths (or
spathes) (come) clusters of dates hanging low and near: and (then there
are) gardens of grapes and olives and pomegranates each similar (in
kind) yet different (in variety): when they begin to bear fruit and
the ripeness thereof. Behold! in these things there are signs for people
who believe.
Yet they make the Jinns equals with Allah though Allah did create the
Jinns; and they falsely having no knowledge attribute to Him sons and
daughters. Praise and glory be to Him! (for He is) above what they attribute
to Him!.
To Him is due the primal origin of the heavens and the earth: how can
He have a son when He hath no consort? He created all things and He
hath full knowledge of all things.
That is Allah your Lord! There is no god but He the Creator of all things:
then worship ye Him: and He hath power to dispose of all affairs.
No vision can grasp Him but His grasp is over all vision: He is above
all comprehension yet is acquainted with all things.
"Now have come to you from your Lord proofs to open your eyes:
if any will see it will be for (the good of) his own soul; if any will
be blind it will be to his own (harm): I am not (here) to watch over
your doings." Thus do We explain the Signs by various (symbols):
that they may say "Thou hast taught us diligently" and that
We may make the matter clear to those who know. Follow what thou art
taught by inspiration from thy Lord: there is no god but He: and turn
aside from those who join gods with Allah.
If it had been Allah's Plan they would not have taken false gods: but
We made thee not one to watch over their doings nor art thou set over
them to dispose of their affairs.
At another place, Chapter 21 verses 20-30 Allah says:
To Him belong all (creatures) in the heavens and on earth: even
those who are in His (very) Presence are not too proud to serve Him
nor are they (ever) weary (of His service):
They do not celebrate His praises night and day nor do they ever flag
Or have they taken (for worship) gods from the earth who can raise (the
dead)?
If there were in the heavens and the earth other gods besides Allah
there would have been confusion in both! But glory to Allah the Lord
of the Throne: (high is He) above what they attribute to Him!
He cannot be questioned for His acts but they will be questioned (for
theirs).
Or have they taken for worship (other) gods besides Him? Say "Bring
your convincing proof: this is the Message of those with me and the
Message of those before me." But most of them know not the Truth
and so turn away.
Not an apostle did We send before thee without this inspiration sent
by Us to him: that there is no god but I; therefore worship and serve
Me.
And they say: "(Allah) Most Gracious has begotten offspring."
Glory to Him! they are (but) servants raised to honor.
They speak not before He speaks and they act (in all things) by His
command. He knows what is before them and what is behind them and they
offer no intercession except for those who are acceptable and they stand
in awe and reverence of His (glory).
If any of them should say "I am a god besides Him" such a
god We should reward with Hell: thus do We reward those who do wrong.
Ch 21: V
In chapter 36, Al Yasin Allah says from verses 21-28
Then there came running from the farthest part of the City a
man saying "O my people! Obey the apostles:
"Obey those who ask no reward of you (for themselves) and who have
themselves received Guidance.
"It would not be reasonable in me if I did not serve Him Who created
me and to Whom ye shall (all) be brought back.
"Shall I take (other) gods besides Him? If (Allah) Most Gracious
should intend some adversity for me of no use whatever will be their
intercession for me nor can they deliver me.
"I would indeed if I were to do so be in manifest Error.
"For me I have faith in the Lord of you (all): listen then to me!"
It was said: "Enter thou the Garden." He said "Ah me!
would that my People knew (what I know)!
"For that my Lord has granted me Forgiveness and has enrolled me
among those held in honor!"
Again in the same chapter verses 75 – 76 Allah says:
Yet they take (for worship) gods other than Allah (hoping) that they
might be helped!
They have not the power to help them: but they will be brought up (before
Our Judgment-Seat) as a troop (to be condemned).
Again Allah says emphatically that those who take
others as gods besides Allah, they should know that these so-called
gods cannot do them any good because they do not have any power and
they will have to answer in front of their Lord.
In chapter 42 verses 9-13 we read:
If Allah had so willed He could have made them a single people;
but He admits whom He will to His Mercy; and the wrongdoers will have
neither protector nor helper.
What! Have they taken (for worship) protectors besides Him? But it is
Allah who is the Protector and it is He Who gives life to the dead:
it is He Who has power over all things.
Whatever it be wherein ye differ the decision thereof is with Allah:
Such is Allah my Lord: in Him I trust and to Him I turn.
(He is) the Creator of the heavens and the earth: He has made for you
pairs from among yourselves and pairs among cattle: by this means does
He multiply you: there is nothing whatever like unto Him and He is the
All hearing and All seeing.
To Him belongs the key of the heavens and the earth: He enlarges and
restricts the Sustenance to whom He will: for He knows full well all
things.
And because we are running out of time I will finish today
by quoting the chapter which our Beloved Prophet (saw) has said is equal
to one third of the Holy Quran, namely chapter 112. It reads as follows:
Say: He is Allah the One and Only;
Allah the Eternal Absolute;
He begets not nor is He begotten;
And there is none like unto Him.
These are some of the verses of the Holy Quran that
deal with Tauhid which is commonly translated as monotheism. As I have
already told you there are many others. May Allah help each one amongst
us to strive to understand the real meaning of Tauhid and may Allah
enable each one of us to become a practical model of Tauhid wherever
we may be.
